You know that shocked look Macaulay Culkin had on his face when he realized he was home alone? We imagine the victim in this week’s featured crime had a similar expression when he realized the opposite.
At 6:30 a.m. on July 23, a resident of the 3500 block of Crescent Avenue woke up and discovered that his iPad, his Dell laptop, and a white bag were not on the kitchen counter, where he’d left them before going to bed at 11 p.m. The man was also surprised to find the door leading from the kitchen to his backyard was wide open, because he thought he was the only person in the house. When he realized that someone had rifled through all of the cabinets and drawers in the kitchen, he called the police.
Officers arrived and cleared the property to make sure no burglars were still on the premises. They soon discovered several items – including hats, sunglasses, and briefcases – strewn about the backyard. When the officers entered the detached garage, it was immediately apparent that a burglar had ransacked all three vehicles therein: a silver 2011 Honda CRV, a silver 2011 Mercedes E350, and a green 2011 Land Rover RRV. The victim could not offer a full inventory of stolen items without consulting his wife, who was out of town, and his housekeeper. I bet the homeowner is upgrading their security system after that incident.

- At 2:45 p.m. on July 21, a resident of the 4200 block of Beverly Drive reported that someone stole a pair of earrings made of platinum and 18-karat gold from the dressing table in her master bathroom between June 30 and July 2. Coincidentally, that very dressing table was being repaired from June 30 to July 2. The victim called her contractor, and a supervisor there assured her that all of the workers who visited her home would be subjected to polygraph tests.
- At 10:30 p.m. on July 22, a teenage resident of the 4300 block of Overhill Drive parked her gold 2006 Lexus GX470 in her driveway and went inside her house. At 8:20 the next morning, her housekeeper woke her up to tell her that the driver’s side door was wide open. The teen went outside and discovered that someone had helped himself to her $200 Louis Vuitton wallet, which held her driver’s license and debit card.
- Between 5:40 p.m. on July 24 and 7:40 a.m. on July 25, a thief stole $2,500 worth of tires and rims from a black 2008 Cadillac Escalade in the 4400 block of McFarlin Boulevard.
- At 9 p.m. on July 24, someone parked a silver 2001 Chevrolet Tracker in a driveway in the 3800 block of Mockingbird Lane. The owner of the property did not recognize the Tracker, and by 4 p.m. the next day he’d grown tired of seeing it in his driveway. He called the police, who ordered a tow truck to remove the vehicle.
- Between 10 p.m. on July 24 and 5:30 a.m. on July 25, a burglar entered a white 2011 GMC Sierra and a gray 2005 Toyota 4Runner outside a home in the 4500 block of Arcady Avenue. A $350 Bradshaw knife, a $250 Swiss Army knife, and a $200 iPhone were taken from the Sierra, while a $15 garage-door opener was stolen from 4Runner. There were no signs of forced entry on either vehicle.
- Between 6 p.m. on July 26 and 6 a.m. on July 27, a thief stole $2,500 worth of tires and rims from a black 2008 Chevy Tahoe in the 3400 block of Southwestern Boulevard.
