Home has a new meaning and a renewed place in our lives as a result of COVID-19. Over the past nine months or so, home, whether your primary residence or a second home, has been a place of safety and shelter from the pandemic, a source of respite and solitude, and also a place where we celebrate life events.
How we used to gather to celebrate – birthdays, anniversaries, baby showers, holidays, dinner parties – has all changed as a result of the coronavirus, and the holidays this year will be no exception.
Turn back the clock seven months or so ago when schools were all virtual, retail stores were only operating online, restaurants were shut down or “to go” only, and sometimes your only outing was to the grocery store. That time in my family and my life caused me to think differently on how I viewed home, how we make our house a central artery of our family and the place where life is still celebrated with those we love.
A New Way Forward
I was determined to continue celebrating key milestones and life events – but I knew I needed to find “a new way forward” to make home special and holidays and life celebrations simple, elegant, and memorable.
Truth is, this “new way forward” had been in the works in my mind, my heart, and my family for quite some time.
I have always loved a big celebration or a festive holiday – but I have wrestled for years with how much time it took to make it all happen. So, several years ago, I resolved to make decorating and entertaining easier so I could have more time with my loved ones.
I made a simple switch from setting my table with linens and fine china, to using darling, festive paper goods. That simple change was liberating. I learned I did not have to compromise style and elegance to make my holiday, dinner party, or celebration special.
During the pandemic, when celebrating had to look different, I would set my table with fun, elegant tablescapes that were fully disposable and brought the celebratory spirit to our home. I realized that others around me were having to learn how to make the home a celebration haven, and I recognized my years of creating simple, elegant, and turnkey table settings for holidays, birthdays, and dinner parties was something I could share with others.
