Old Shepard Place in Plano is a classic, established neighborhood with tons of trees, some fantastic single-story homes, and a little bit of whimsical history. Living among the neighbors? None other than Ebby Halliday’s Kirk Scott, who’s lived there for over a decade and absolutely loves it.

“A lot of people do not know this, but Preston Road used to be called the Preston Trail,” Scott explains. “It was an old cattle drive that went up to the Red River, where cattle were then put on barges to go East or West.

“Many people on the cattle drive would stop off at Old Shepard Place. It was a mule farm and that was the best place to buy a mule in the United States. As a matter of fact, the family graveyard was inside the neighborhood. When I plant trees or if people install a fence, it’s not uncommon to dig up a mule jawbone or two.”

Here are seven things Kirk Scott adores about his Old Shepard Place neighborhood:

1. Location

Old Shepard is in Plano, obviously, we covered that. But it’s WHERE it sits in Plano that makes it so great. It’s right off Preston Road and Park Blvd., situated near both tollways — the Dallas North Tollway and President George Bush Turnpike, which means you can pretty much get anywhere in North Dallas in 20 minutes.

2. Location Location

Like I said, it’s Park and Preston, which is a huge retail draw. All four corners of this intersection have shopping centers with fantastic places to spend all your dough like REI, Gap, Barnes & Noble, Paper Source, Nordstrom Rack, Party City, and the absolute cutest children’s boutique and OG Plano resident, Animal Crackers. Are you picking up what I’m laying down? It has EVERYTHING.

PLUS, and lean in real close, a brand new Home Goods store is being built right this very minute. You can squeal, it’s okay. We’ll be like that old Mervyn’s commercial with our noses pressed to the glass. Open, open, open.

3. Food

Not only is there a Steve Fields, which is a secret North Dallas should know about, but there’s also a Rise moving in soon. Katy Trail Outpost, Goat & Vine, Pie Tap, Snuffer’s, and Luby’s – shut your mouth, I love a LuAnn. Tons of options from higher end to order-at-the-counter. OH and a TacoDeli. Y’all, they have it all. Scott said if you’re ambitious you can even walk or bike to the restaurants.

4. Get Cookin’

Oh, did you want to make a meal at home? Pop into Whole Foods, Market Street, or Trader Joe’s. You have plenty of grocery options here.

5. The Neighborhood

Scott said the number one thing people comment on is all the beautiful trees in the median. The HOA takes care of that, and it creates a picture-perfect little neighborhood.

6. The Houses

There’s a variety of architectural styles from soft contemporary to traditional and almost every home is a single story. The lots are generous, and all the garages are in the back with alley access. That creates a cohesive look on the streets and lots of privacy out back.

7. Huffman Elementary

The neighborhood elementary recently became The IB (International Baccalaureate) World School at Huffman Elementary and people are losing their minds. It’s a HUGE deal, very few schools hold this accreditation and if you want to know more, we got you.

Take a peek at what real estate is available in Old Shepard Place and say, “Hi” to Kirk while you’re there.
