The State Fair of Texas kicked off Sept. 30, and once again more than 2 million guests are scooting their boots through Dallas. By the looks of the homes on the market, it’s a safe bet that maybe a few will stay.

From the outside looking in, the state fair is all about Big Tex, livestock, music, and deep-fried everything — but locals know it’s also about family.

The homes featured in this special edition of Candy’s Dirt Open Houses of the Week are a must-see for anyone who is considering a move to our fair city.

Designed by Fair Park Legend George Dahl

It wouldn’t be a State Fair story without a mention of George Dahl, the architect who designed several buildings at the historic Fair Park.

The Dallas landmark that houses the State Fair of Texas could soon be getting a $300 million upgrade contingent on a Nov. 8 proposal to increase the city’s hotel occupancy tax.

Also getting a makeover is the midcentury masterpiece at 3601 Turtle Creek Blvd., Unit T1.

The spot in Gold Crest Condominiums — deemed one of the most architecturally significant buildings in the region — was recently cleared and is ready for renovations with plans designed by FAR + DANG.

Unit T1, on the northeast corner of the terrace level, is listed for $599,000. On the market for just over a week, the condo has floor-to-ceiling windows and ample outdoor space. There’s room across 1,678 square feet for two bedrooms and two bathrooms.

We’re sure you’ll love the neighborhood, so don’t forget to check out the virtual Turtle Creek Tour of Homes on Saturday, Oct. 8, chaired by our very own Candy Evans.

Deep in the Heart of Briar Ridge Estates

Let’s just cut to the chase. This home is huge. It has high ceilings and big windows to let in lots of natural light. It has custom walk-in closets. And it’s in Plano ISD, which earned a B rating from the Texas Education Agency.

The $1.18 million abode at 5906 Edinburgh Court is in Briar Ridge Estates, just a few minutes from shops, restaurants, and major highways. And perhaps more importantly, it’s about 15 miles from the State Fair of Texas.

The 3,877-square-foot, two-story traditional home has four bedrooms, three and one-half baths, and a three-car garage.

With multi-level landscaping, custom cabinetry, new professional-grade ZLINE appliances, a tankless water heater, and white oak flooring, it’s a great home for family gatherings or hosting guests who are in town for the fair. The driveway has space for six guest vehicles, and the yard is big enough for a pool.

Realtor Anna Kemp with Posh Property Advisers is hosting an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8.

All’s Fair on Hanover Avenue

The home at 5106 W. Hanover Ave. is brimming with updates in the heart of Briarwood — just six miles from the State Fair of Texas.

Featuring two living areas, three bedrooms, and four bathrooms, this $1.6 million gem has custom and designer finished throughout.

It was built in 2007 and recently remodeled with quartz countertops, built-ins, and a bar area for entertaining. The upstairs offers a second primary suite for guests, with a spacious bathroom, expansive closet, office, and private balcony.

The backyard oasis includes a covered back patio overlooking a pool, luscious landscaping, and turf area.

Realtor Mary Perry with Compass is hosting an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9.
