Frank Welch’s Iconic Northern Hills Home is For Sale Again

In 2017, the Northern Hills Home of Frank Welch went on the market. It was just after the man known as the Dean of Texas Architecture passed away at the age of 90.

At that time, the property was already well known in architectural circles and didn’t sit on the market for long. Why? The home speaks to Welch’s design sensibility, says Tricia Weiner with Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate, who listed the home in 2017 and again just days ago.

“It is completely his iconic style with light and space — understated yet sophisticated,” Weiner said. “I think his use of symmetry, timeless elegance, and space are my favorite parts. He was a very interesting man and he blended his concepts so effortlessly.”

To see the home now is to see it with new eyes, as the sellers of 3511 Cragmont have added a whole different flavor to this Northern Hills home with a monochrome palette and sleek furnishings. However, not much else has changed.

“The sellers have honored his style by keeping it so true to him and to his craft,” said Weiner, who has priced this textbook example of Welch’s style for $1.799 million. The three-bedroom, three-bathroom home has 2,942 square feet. According to Candy’s write-up of the property, it also has some of Welch’s go-to design choices.

Some of Welch’s trademarks in the construction of his Cragmont Avenue home include his signature use of St. Joe brick (from St. Joe Brick Works, Inc. in Pearl River, LA), soaring ceilings, rift-cut oak cabinetry in the kitchen, and glass everywhere possible, including skylights, which let in volumes of light, a key element in his work. His homes are known for embracing light and artfully bringing it into the home.

Welch’s legacy lives on with this property and the many others that can be found all over Texas. However, this particular home has already generated quite a bit of buzz, Weiner said.

“I cannot tell you the number of calls, emails, and texts I have had to show the property, but showings don’t begin until noon on Wednesday,” she said. “I anticipate a great deal of interest and of offers on the property.”

Tricia Weiner of Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate has listed this incredible Northern Hills home designed by the legendary Frank Welch at 3511 Cragmont Ave. for $1.799 million.
