Architect Scott Lyons designed what is considered by many to be one of the most important Texas Modern homes in Dallas. These architecturally significant residences don’t hit the market often because the lifestyle they provide is second to none.

The creation of the Texas Modern style is credited to legendary architects David Williams and his protégé, O’Neil Ford, and draws inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright.

These architects wanted to create practical, sensible, and efficient homes that utilized native materials and created a seamless relationship with nature.

This style has become so wildly successful that today’s builders have fully embraced it. But, nothing beats an original!

You may not be familiar with Scott Lyons. That’s because he kept a low profile on purpose. He practiced alone, did his own drawings, and was the person that picked up the phone when you called. He built one house at a time and took great care with each of his projects.

Despite that low profile, he was highly sought after by prominent Dallas families. He designed two homes for Texas Instrument’s founder Eugene McDermott and his wife, Margaret. Lyons was one of those word-of-mouth architects, and you considered yourself lucky, indeed, if he was available for your project because he was a perfectionist.

Considering how few homes Lyon’s built, and how beautifully they are executed, it’s rare to find one for sale. This Mayflower Estates Texas Modern is on the market for the first time in a decade. Architectural significance is always a huge attraction because you know the style and quality are a given.

The home was built in 1985, and in 2010 the present owners went the distance to ensure this 9,741-square-foot Texas Modern had the appropriate updates without detracting from the original style. The masterful updates on this five-bedroom, eight-bathroom beauty include a fantastic Bulthaup kitchen.

Architect Nick Glazbrook designed a two-story, 3,800-square-foot guest house on the property to complement Lyons’ style. It has a private entrance, two bedrooms, four bathrooms, a powder bath, and gorgeous creek views.

For anyone seeking privacy and security, it would be difficult to top this Texas Modern. Situated on 2.6 acres and set well back from the road, this gated property has a six-foot-high security wall constructed with hand-cut bricks that span more than 600 feet of street frontage.

If you are familiar with Dallas, you know just how safe this area is. If not, I’ll clue you in. This property backs up to Gene and Roxanne Phillips 16-plus acre estate, which in turn backs up to former President George W. Bush and wife Laura’s home. Security is not going to be an issue here.

If you are looking for an exceptional, architecturally significant property with zero security worries, you’ve found it!

Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s agent Faisal Halum has 10240 Gaywood Road listed for $9.95 million.
