A North Dallas woman was killed after being shot during an apparent carjacking late Monday afternoon in the 6100 block of Royalton Drive, according to news reports and Dallas police.

The woman has been identified as Leslie Squair Baker, age 59, a mother of two college-age children, Dallas Police confirmed. Her husband, Robert H. Baker, is a real estate broker. Baker worked at Texas Healthcare Resources in Plano, president of Texas Health Center for Diagnostics and Surgery Larry Q. Robertson confirmed in a statement.

“Officers pulled the victim out of the vehicle and immediately began performing first aid before the arrival of Dallas Fire-Rescue,” Dallas Police said in a statement. “The victim was transported to an area hospital, where she died from her injuries.”

Neighbors say six shots were fired. Recordings from neighbors’ security systems indicate three slow shots fired by a rapid succession of six.

I live in the area, was home at the time, but heard no gunshots. However, many neighbors did, and the neighborhood app NextDoor is brimming with information on the shooting, including a description of the alleged assailant’s car and the possibility that an Amazon delivery truck may have witnessed the crime or assailants. Others say Baker had dropped by a friend’s home near Willow Lane, and was approached by a man with a gun when she returned home. Her husband was at home and heard the shots.

According to an official police statement, Baker was on her cell phone, in her driveway, talking to a friend and said, “I’m being robbed.” Then the phone went dead.

“Leslie Squair Baker was a kind and loving woman, who was a few years behind me at W.T. White,” said Karen Lukin, a friend. “I shall remember her most for the kindness she showed my mom, who was hospitalized for long periods where Leslie worked. She would bring flowers and visit, and call with a cheery message to tell me about their chats. May God guide her way, and take care of Leslie’s husband, mom and kids as kindly as Leslie looked after my mom.”
