Preservationists take note! This Winnetka Heights airplane bungalow is an absolute dream!

So much so, that we had duke it out: the talented and always in-the-know Lisa Peters of Caliber Home Loans alerted us to it as this week’s High Caliber Home of the Week, as did I take notice as a rarely exceptional $400,000 selection for the Friday Four Hundred.

Exceptionally sited on an oversized corner lot near the iconic Turner House, rests this fabulous two-bedroom, two-bathroom charmer. Buying it means owning a slice of Oak Cliff history — and the exquisite architecture is only the beginning.

“One look at Rosemont will convince you that it is an exceptionally good place to live,” proclaims a November 1912 ad in the Dallas Morning News.

The advertisement extolled the merits of this emerging development they were calling Rosemont, a departure from the Winnetka Heights moniker the area carries today. This was approximately five years before the home at 227 N. Rosemont Avenue was built, as a then-five-bedroom ideal for a large family. The current configuration, of course, is an idyllic footprint for today’s buyer.

The Ultimate Buy For Preservationists And Oak Cliff-Philes Alike

The historic Winnetka Heights stunner should interest preservationists and Oak Cliff-philes alike, says listing agent Diane Sherman of Dave Perry-Miller, who is a preservationist herself.

“From a historic architecture standpoint, this is an extraordinary and much-admired property,” says Sherman.

What sets this gem apart is two-fold. First, the architecture style is rare. Situated on a nearly quarter-acre corner lot in the Winnetka Heights Historic District, it is one of just seven airplane bungalows in the neighborhood. The architectural style is named for the half story that “pops” out of the first floor like an airplane cockpit.

Second, it’s the only airplane bungalow with a quadruple gabled front façade — two prominent gables in the front, including one over the oversized front porch, and two more layered in the back, Sherman notes.

Among the highlights are a vaulted covered porch with exposed rafters and an open concrete terrace. The divided pane windows are remarkable as well, she says, adding “The centermost window is a ‘forty over one’!”

Of 600 homes in the Winnetka Heights historic district, this one stands out as a prime example of the style, but with thoughtful updates that make it perfect for modern-day. This includes a distinct ceiling mural in the living, a commercial gas range in the kitchen, and inviting spaces to entertain.

A Deep 215-Foot Corner Lot That’s Great For Families

Even better, the home sits on a 215-foot-deep corner lot. Families will appreciate that it anchors a long block of expansive front lawns where children can run and play from house to house.

Per Sherman, “This home has 2,325 square feet of conditioned square feet with an additional 94-square-foot service porch, not yet included in the square footage. At only $201/square foot, it has improvement room to spare. The kitchen can be enlarged to include not only the service porch but also the breakfast room. The art room could easily transform into a downstairs master bath.”

Desirable Alternative For Those Sheltering-In-Place

Lastly, if the existing layout doesn’t work for you, there are options.

“The upper level offers various possibilities,” Sherman says. “One such possibility is in the architect rendering showing the creation of two-bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. Then again having a large upstairs master with a cheerful home office is certainly a desirable alternative, especially these days for those sheltering-working in place.”

Diane Sherman with Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate has listed 227 N. Rosemont Avenue for $467,500.
