A Great Winnetka Heights LocationHistoric Details That Stand Out

When people fall in love with the 100-year-old Craftsman and Prairie-style homes in Winnetka Heights, they don’t fall for the updates. It’s the original details — details that smart owners have left well enough alone — that captivate lovers of historic homes in the Oak Cliff neighborhood. Glazed cabinetry, wide millwork, and original hardwood floors are enough to send any lover of historic architecture swooning.

As it turns out, this listing from Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate‘s Laura Wiswall comes with some eye-popping original cabinetry, trim, and hardwood floors. But that’s not the only reason this Winnetka Heights Craftsman is our  Highlight Home of The Week sponsored by Senior Loan Officer Lisa Peters of First Horizon. The neighborhood itself should get some credit, too.

A Great Winnetka Heights Location

For Wiswall’s listing, one of the big selling points is that it’s on the same block as the new Kevin Sloan Park, which was at one time the 12th Street connector. Sloan, a landscape architect, had a dream to remove the street and give Winnetka Heights some much-needed green space.

After his death, the neighborhood rallied behind the park, even going so far as to set up a Gofundme.

That’s just part of what makes the neighborhood special, said Wiswall, who is an Oak Cliff resident herself.

“It’s family-friendly, but it’s also friendly to everyone and inclusive,” she said of the neighborhood. “It’s just a wonderful place to live. There’s nowhere like it and I just absolutely love it. I would not live anywhere else.”

Historic Details That Stand Out

Inside this Winnetka Heights Craftsman you’ll find original trim and millwork in great condition, including two storage benches flanking the fireplace in the living room which will be great for putting away all your blankets now that it’s spring.

Of course, the beautiful windows with brass hardware, are impressive. Check out that 24-over-one window next to the front door. Just beyond the original pocket doors, there’s another one in the office, which also has some magnificent glazed cabinetry and a dreamy window seat.

“I love the dining room,” Wiswall said. “It has coffered ceilings with original millwork and it’s literally the center of the home.”

Just through the dining room is a butler’s pantry, and just beyond that is the kitchen, which features rich green cabinets and a fun honeycomb marble backsplash. And just past that is a sunroom with full-light French doors that open to the backyard.

With three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and 1,936 square feet, this is not a small house. But the areas that have been updated weren’t overdone, keeping the scale of this 1945-built Winnetka Heights Craftsman intact. That’s evident in the primary suite, which has an ensuite bath featuring a claw-foot tub and a pedestal sink.

It’s altogether an adorable property in an equally adorable neighborhood. It’s a place that Wiswall says you shouldn’t pass up.

“It’s hard to say what makes Oak Cliff special. There are so many things,” she said. “It’s the very-friendly neighbors. It’s the great bars and restaurants you can walk to. It’s just a totally different vibe from the rest of Dallas and my husband and I love it.”

Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate’s Laura Wiswall has listed 421 S. Winnetka Ave. for $574,000.
