Appreciation for architecture from the 1970s is slowly unfolding, but I’ll tell you where real bang for your buck lies today. It’s in homes built in the 1980s. Our Inwood Home of the Week at 4730 Royal Lane is a Preston Hollow classic contemporary that was built by Shepherd and Boyd, and it’s the best-kept secret in town.

During the 1980s Shepherd and Boyd were well-known for building terrific, solid homes. If you’ve been in Dallas awhile, you may have heard of a little project Shepherd was involved with called The Crescent.

The long driveway curves in front of the house for seamless entry and exit and continues down the right side of the house.

This 6,285-square-foot home was a custom build for real estate investor, broker, and developer J.C. Sterquell. Let’s recap. Great architects built this Preston Hollow classic contemporary for a client that could afford the best of the best. Are you beginning to see what I mean about homes of this age?

What will truly blow your mind about this Preston Hollow classic contemporary, however, is the location. Nestled deep in a heavily wooded lot of over an acre of land, just off Royal Lane and bounded by Strait and Lennox Lanes, you would never know it exists. It cannot be seen from the street, and when you do manage to find it, you drive past a wall into a magical garden setting that is entirely unexpected.

“People think a home on Royal Lane is going to be noisy,” homeowner Jerry Moore said. “We can go outdoors in any area of the yard, and feel like we are nowhere near a busy street. It’s an enclave. It’s hidden because of the mature trees and the fences that surround it. So, it’s easy to be outside and feel you are actually away in the country. It’s extremely private.”

Moore and his wife Heather are only the second owners of this Preston Hollow classic contemporary, having purchased it because it is in the perfect location.

“Our children were going to St. Marks and Hockaday. The house is equidistant between the two,” Moore said. It is a great house to raise a family with five bedrooms, six bathrooms, two powder baths, four living areas, an exercise room, a solarium, a music room, and guest quarters.

“It is a great house to entertain in, and enjoy the outdoors at the same time,” Moore said. “We can have very large gatherings here.” In fact, the Moores were the first Dallas family to host an Idlewild debutant party at a private family home. It’s that kind of house!

All of the rooms flow off of a 127-foot long hallway, and yes the Moores did catch their son in his younger years getting in some serious rollerblade practice on the marble floors!

The music room opens into two of the large living spaces and overlooks the lush grounds.

You’d never know it but there is serious storage hidden in those staircase panels. There’s even a refrigerator in there!

The home has a delightful solarium overlooks the pool, and covered patio from three sides. You can see the guest quarters through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

The house is filled with a character you seldom see today and opens onto gorgeous grounds that include a resort-sized pool and a secret garden and another private property entrance.

07_4730RoyalLane_007_mls-1“Every time I enter the property and drive down the winding motor court, I feel I’m in a secret place no one knows about,” The Associates listing agent Ty Vaughn said.

Now let’s talk neighbors. If you need to borrow a bottle of champagne, the Nowitzkis, Hershs, and Maloufs are all within a stone’s throw.

Vaughn has the property priced at $1.8 million, and it’s not in MLS yet. This is an incredible deal, so move fast!
