This Midcentury Modern Is So Spectacular, We Don’t Even Know Where To Start

Northwood Hills is no stranger to stunners. It’s an absolutely breathtaking neighborhood in North Dallas. Known for large lots, loads of trees, and deep setbacks, it’s highly sought after and very easy to see why. The architecture is varied and adds to the “I want to be there” vibe of this impeccable neighborhood.

Preservation Dallas knows what’s up and that’s where you’ll find a deep dive on the history of Northwood Hills. Originally developed by William Troth, George Mixon, Sr., and George Mixon, Jr. in the mid-1950s, Northwood Hills offered “ultra-modern homes ranging from $40,000 to $60,000, with every conceivable home improvement and better-living feature.” As such, this home was featured on the 1959 Parade of Homes.

In the early days of development, Troth, Mixon, and Mixon sold acreage to help pay for street and alley paving. They also sold off 30 acres to Trammell Crow for a retail development on Coit Road and a little chunk of land to the City of Dallas for Fretz Park. Around this time, a local landscaper, Clodus Fields went around and planted oak and magnolia seedlings which are now the towering trees the neighborhood is known for. If Clodus Fields rings a bell and you’ve ever been to Medical City Dallas, you’ve likely cut through on a street bearing his name. SHORTCUTS.

Now that we’ve knocked out the history lesson, let’s talk about this house. Rogers Healy and Associates Real Estate’s Lisa Lantz (great name!!) is in love with this bonafide, appropriately updated Midcentury Modern set on three-quarters of an acre.

It is so spectacular it’s hard to know where to start. Is it the massive backyard surrounded by a brick wall that serves as a fence and seasonal blooming pink Crepe Myrtles lining it? Or the attention to detail in the updating? Or the fact that the original Terrazzo tile is absolutely GLEAMING?

There’s just so much to ooh and aah over in this one. It’s huge for one. Four bedrooms and four bathrooms spread out over 4,045 square feet. There’s a three-car garage and a separate parking pad. Together they can accommodate six cars. You basically have your very own, very exclusive car club if you want.

The pool out back has been updated and the best part? A separate bathroom with a shower that opens to the garage.

The backyard is actually split in two sections and has a full-on outdoor kitchen with a refrigerator and dishwasher, too. And there’s a fountain!! That trickles over a glorious stack of rocks.

Aren’t you just dying to get inside this home? It’s so exquisite, you kind of have to savor the build-up. The first step inside and you notice the incredible Terrazzo, built-in planter, stacked stone fireplace, and step-up living area. It’s like a literal checklist of how to do a high-end Midcentury Modern. Also proving Troth, Mixon, and Mixon were NOT lying, this house does, indeed, have every conceivable home improvement.

Teak and natural wood are everywhere in this home. In the beams that run the length of almost every room, the built-in bookcases (most of which are original), the kitchen cabinets, the planks lining the kitchen ceiling (along with four fantastic skylights), and the updated flooring that’s a delightful complement to it all.

In the primary bedroom, the checklist continues with notched-out ceilings, more beams, and the most amazing clerestory windows. The primary bathroom has been tastefully updated with higher countertops and a huge shower with dual showerheads. Plus, there’s a large walk-in closet off the primary bath with a built-in dresser. It skews a little more modern than midcentury, but with those muted tones it fits right in.

The dining room has a wall of windows looking out into that amazing backyard. There’s also a huge game room and three additional bedrooms. Each more charming than the next.

This is one home where words don’t even do it justice, you just want to sit and scroll through the pictures all day. Do yourself one better though and stop by the Open House this Saturday, Feb. 12 and Sunday, Feb. 13 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Lantz will be there hosting and she’ll be happy to show you around.

Lisa Lantz of Rogers Healy and Associates Real Estate has listed 6923 Alpha Road for $1,295,000.
