This Kessler Park Midcentury Is a Lesson in Geometry

This week’s Inwood Home of the Week, sponsored by Inwood National Bank, introduces us to a Kessler Park home that knows her angles. Acute. Obtuse. She knows them all.

Located on a perfect block of Knott Place in a hilly Kessler Park neighborhood near Sylvan Ave., this 2,294-square-foot home with three bedrooms and three full baths is listed by Chris Hickman of Ebby Halliday Realtors. Here you’ll find surprising and dramatic angles in this one-and-a-half story, 1956-built home.

“I love the charming front porch that covers the entire front of the house,” Hickman says. “And although the house has the perfect picturesque traditional look, the inside could really lean modern with simple clean lines.”

As you walk in, you’ll find two separate living areas — this front room that’s been set up as a casual study and a cozier family room near the dining area and kitchen. I love the acute angle of this fireplace’s shallow firebox, reminiscent of a Rumford fireplace with angled walls to better reflect and disperse heat.

The kitchen has been updated with sleek stainless steel appliances and painted shaker cabinetry, but retains its midcentury charm with a pop of teal-colored floating shelves. An oversize skylight lights up the charming checkboard floors that give me spicy brown mustard color vibes, while windows and a door to the backyard bring in the vibrant green that’s abundant outside.

The original hardwoods shine in this second living area that showcases the lush, low-maintenance landscape design of the shady backyard. On the other side of the room, a fireplace wall angles obtusely and opens up the room.

Two of the three bedrooms are suites with private bathrooms which allows the primary bedroom to be downstairs or upstairs. The upstairs bedroom is an interesting flex space full of curious angles. I flipped to its previous listing in 2018 and found the photos of the emptied space much easier to make out.

Pretty cool space, right? It’s large enough for a home office, a game room, or an artist’s studio.

Then we come to the terraced backyard that’s just heavenly. Tall, mature trees shade Hostas, Ferns, and other verdant life set on a hill, so you have privacy from across-the-alley neighbors. A shaded sitting area is situated between the house and the detached two-car garage — again, totally private and serene.

“The owners have poured their heart and soul in the backyard and it is landscaped beautifully,” Hickman says. “The pictures don’t even do it justice.”
