Last month, we told you about the “2015 Sitting Pretty Porta Potty Screen Contest,” created in response to Highland Park’s new rule that portable toilets be screened from the public’s view at residential construction sites.

The contest, sponsored by Sardone Construction and HPD Architecture, closed June 29 and the winners have been announced. Close to 30 people registered and 17 submitted designs.

To refresh your memory, the challenge was to create screens that were more attractive than the standard plywood construction, “to design a porta potty screen of your own. Something with a bit of flare! Maybe a little splash! A screen that says, “When ya gotta go, you might as well do it in style!”

Four winning entries showcase originality, splash, and practicality. The first-place design will be built by HPD and Sardone in the coming weeks.

The four winning entries reflect the spirit and creativity of the contest in their originality and practical applications. First prize went to Brian Paletz, AIA, who received a $100 gift certificate. But more important, his design will be built by Sardone Construction, with HPD coordinating construction drawings. Once completed, the screen will be placed on one of Sardone’s job sites in Highland Park.

“What I do love about the winner is that it has two separate porta potties—I interpret it as a separate porta potties for women and men, which is novel for a job site,” said Stephan Sardone, owner of Sardone Construction. “We are seeing more women in our industry and I liked the idea that this design is part of the future of our industry. Keep your eye open for it next time you’re driving through Highland Park.”

Second place was awarded to Matthew Jacobson, who, in addition to bragging rights, gets a $75 gift certificate.

Third place was awarded to Benton Banowsky, a $50 gift certificate, and the “most creative design” award goes to Eddie Hale, along with a $50 gift certificate.

Each of the 2015 “Porta Potty Screen” winners will be honored and presented with a plaque and the gift certificate at HPD’s monthly Architecture Happy Hour August 19, 2015, at BMC Design Center in Dallas. Their entries will be displayed for attendees to view.

A noted group of eight judges (including our founder Candy Evans) represented industries that included architecture, construction, interior design, publishing, event planning, real estate, and homeowners. The judges carefully analyzed and evaluated the variety of submissions prior to casting their votes for the winning entries.
