Remodeled to Perfection, Prairie Home in Winnetka Heights Shines

314-S.-Winnetka-Front

If you’ve got déjà vu over this Winnetka Heights prairie four-square, you’re not alone. This gorgeous renovated home was on the Dec. 5 Winnetka Heights Holiday Home Tour, notes David Griffin & Co. Realtor Diane Sherman.

The sellers did a lot of research about the home, Sherman said. “They found that it was originally three units, and it was family owned.”

It was one of many properties built by W.P. Adleta, a well-known craftsman in Dallas, but it was where the renowned craftsman lived until his death in 1953. It has come a long way since then, thanks to Paul and Cindy Maute, who also redid 101 N. Montclair. That grand manor was on the 2008 Old Oak Cliff Conservation League home tour.

The history and location are enough to make this home worthy of being called our High Caliber Home of the Week, but the tremendous renovation really highlights the details. When you’re ready to put in a bid on the high caliber home of your dreams call Lisa Peters at Caliber Home Loans first. She’ll guide you through the process, ensuring a smooth closing.

Talk about a back story. Let’s start with William Philip Adleta, carpenter, builder, contractor, who moved to Oak Cliff in the 1890s. He built many of the finer homes in Oak Cliff and was instrumental in the development of Ravinia Heights, while also finding time to design and build many of the first structures at the State Fair of Texas. William and his wife Willie moved into 314 S. Winnetka in 1914, a year after it was permitted. William lived there until he died in 1953. Say om and skip ahead almost 40 years to 1990 when the house was purchased by Karma Thegsum Choling Dallas.

Until 2013 the house was the center for the eminent Lama Dudjom Dorjee and an active school for the teaching of Tibetan Buddhist philosophy, offering students mystical insights through practiced meditation. Paul and Cindy Maute meditated long and hard before they bought the house in 2013, but it didn’t take long for them to begin to reshape it. As a renowned architect, Paul designed a new floor plan for the house that included a sweeping staircase that must be seen to be appreciated. As an artist and art teacher, with training under an Italian master glazier, Cindy was confident enough to rebuild and glaze every window in the house. As the fourth home in Winnetka Heights the couple had renovated, no part of the project was too daunting. This was to be their final Dallas renovation, but fate intervened when Paul was offered a major career opportunity in Philadelphia.

I really love what the Mautes did with this treasure of a home. And that staircase! What a wonderful dose of drama it adds to the foyer. The parlor is perfectly cozy, and the coffered ceilings in the formal living room is just the right touch. And those who love historic details will enjoy all of the beautiful hardware and re-glazed windows, which are absolutely perfect thanks to Cindy Maute. If ever there was a remodel that was worth of the builder, this is it.

There are five bedrooms and three full baths inside 314 S. Winnetka, with a first-floor guest suite. That’s a rare commodity in a home that’s almost 100 years old. With 3,992 square feet, two living areas, two dining areas, a gorgeous kitchen with marble and quartz, custom cabinetry and a six-burner Bertazonni range, this home is just the mix of history and high-end living.

The master suite is upstairs and opens to the front balcony. Imagine all the people-watching you can do from the hanging swing out there, cup of coffee in hand, gleaning inspiration from this wonderful North Oak Cliff neighborhood. And it’s a deal, too, considering that Sherman has priced this move-in ready family home for $595,000. The only downside: There’s no covered parking, and to build anything you’d have to go through City Hall.
