daltxrealestate.com: So, where are you from?
Amy Messer: I grew up in Lubbock but moved here in 2001 to attend SMU. I fell in love and Dallas has been my home ever since.
CD: So, how did you get into real estate? What’s your specialty?
AM: I developed a love for real estate and design at a young age. My mother used to always rearrange the furniture and remodel our house when I was little, and that somehow led to my obsession. I bought my first house when I was 24 and was hooked. My broker, Kerry Paradise Slaughter, listed that first house for me and talked me into becoming an agent. It was a match made in career heaven. I can’t imagine doing anything else. I would say I specialize in all of Dallas but tend to focus on East Dallas, M Streets, and Lakewood with a little bit of Oak Lawn and Oak Cliff thrown in there.
CD: How do you stay sharp in a challenging market?
AM: My espresso machine does a lot of the work. Luckily for my clients, I have a hard time turning off and don’t half-ass anything (can I say ass?) (Editor: We won’t stop you!) I am obsessed with my job and work 24/7.
CD: Where is home for you in Dallas?
AM: I live in the most magical neighborhood in Dallas — Easton Place! If any readers aren’t familiar, my house is a late 70s contemporary surrounded by trees and hills.
CD: And you drive a … let me guess, Range Rover?
AM: I drive a BMW. I have a need for speed … and apparently speeding tickets. I would really rather drive an El Camino but my clients are opposed to riding in the back.
CD: What’s your favorite ‘hood in Dallas and why?
AM: I really love all of Dallas. My favorites are East Dallas, Lower Greenville/M Streets, Deep Ellum, and Oak Cliff. Each of these ‘hoods embody a strong sense of self; they really know who they are and what they want to give back to the community. I love the eclectic homes, walkability, and the feeling of belonging in each of those ‘hoods.
CD: What was your best/highest sale?
AM: My best sale was a modern home on Madera. It was full of challenges but led to those clients turning into two of my closest friends. Those are the best kinds of deals and I am so thankful for a job that cultivates those relationships.
CD: Likewise, what was your most challenging or memorable transaction?
AM: It may sound cliché but every deal for me is memorable. I love getting to be a part of that huge next step in my clients’ lives. Oh, and there’s one that involved a goat …
CD: Way to leave us hanging, Amy! Tell us: What was the most interesting thing to happen to you while working with a client?
AM: I have had two clients that work in the liquor/wine rep industry. Let me just say that a case of wine or two always makes the challenges of a deal a little more bearable.
CD: How quickly have you ever turned a house?
AM: My very first listing was under contract in 2 days.
CD: How much did you sell last year?
AM: I sold about $3 million last year, but it was my first year, so I’m counting on a much bigger number for 2015.
CD: What words of wisdom do you often share with clients?
AM: I am the expert so they don’t have to be. With the onslaught of online listings and information, there’s an increased pressure for clients to be super knowledgeable. Ain’t nobody got time for that. That’s what I’m here for.
CD: If you ever change careers for an encore you’ll…
AM: I literally can’t imagine doing anything else. I also don’t think I’ve acquired any other skills in life.
