Compass Realtor Thani Burke Has a Not-So-Secret Talent

This house is every color, texture, wallpaper, remodel, makeover inspiration in the world. It’s in Oak Cliff, built in 1947 and reimagined by Compass’ Thani Burke and her husband, Landon Burke of Burke Building and Restoration.

Thani designed the home and initially, they had ideas to make this a rental, but the more they got into it, the more they realized this one was ready for market. Thani said she wanted to create something that leaned into the nostalgia of the home but gave it a totally cool grandma chic vibe.

It’s a surprise from start to finish. The dining room has a hidden bookcase that opens to the primary bedroom. The color is a gorgeous muted mossy green. Thani said there aren’t any windows in the dining room so she wanted to do something to make it really pop.

The millwork is original and she couldn’t handle painting it white – she was hesitant to paint it at all, but it was so dark, it needed a refresh – so she went with the absolute most perfect monochromatic paint.

Those freaking stunner orange velvet chairs are from the Burkes’ personal collection. The staging is a mix of things she owns and the magic of East Dallas Modern.

Everything in the home has been touched — except the walls. Burke didn’t want to mess with the footprint of this one because she wanted to leave defined spaces for artwork and furniture.

Thani Burke Surprises in The Kitchen

The kitchen was another room where Thani wanted buyers to be delightfully surprised. As she put it, this house parties. The sunny yellow cabinets and muted green and white backsplash are so freaking fun. And yes, that vented hood is custom. The curves along the bottom were inspired by the trim on the cabinetry. It’s a super efficient kitchen with an impressive amount of countertops.

In the bedrooms, Thani kept it clean with white so the new owners could create their own space, But even then that simple, modern, matte black chandelier is KILLER.

She loves wallpaper and went big with a Schumacher print. It’s another fun surprise in the hallways. It feels like it belongs in this house – everything does and again, very, very of the era, but also updated and modern at the same time.

The lot is massive and the fence is stunning, the deck is beautiful, and the grid railing is my favorite. Thani said this house is an intentional contrast to all the white and gray we see everywhere. She had a hunch that the market was craving bold design and lots of color and she wasn’t wrong. At the open house this past weekend, over 60 couples came through. It’s eye-catching and a statement and I’m sure some people just wanted to see their new inspiration in person.

As of this moment, Burke still has 226 S. Barnett Avenue listed for $475,000. Make it yours and then invite me over. It’s the dreamiest.
