Christmas Lights 2022: Arlington’s Interlochen Estates Has Twinkled Brightly For 47 Years

First in a series: Dallas-Fort Worth neighborhoods celebrate the holidays with light displays like no other. We’re presenting neighborhoods individually this year, so let us know if you know of a neighborhood that needs to be showcased. Nominate a neighborhood in an email.

Neighborhood: Interlochen, Arlington.

Where: Enter off Westwood Drive at Randol Mill Road

When: Officially, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Dec. 16-25, but most of the decor will be up earlier and most lights will stay on later.

What makes it unique: What began as a marketing tool for a new subdivision has evolved — 47 years later — into a big gift to the community. In 1976, developer Robert Findlay and his wife Carole enticed potential buyers to their new neighborhood with lots and lots of decorations. The tradition continues with the neighbors paying tribute to the late Findlays by ensuring their home is as turned out as the others.

What: Lights, yard art, technology, and festive music have evolved into a community tradition with friendly competition among homeowners. With approximately 200 houses decorated, this neighborhood display compels Arlington police to help with SUVs loaded with little darlings and their parents. It’s a steady stream most nights, and Ralph Sobel, homeowners’ association president, recommends a Tuesday over a Saturday to avoid the crowds. “The fun part about it is that there’s no other light showing where eight people from three generations can have a free, friendly event,” he said. “It’s a cheap first date or a wonderful family together. The free part of it is part of its charm.”
