The one thing people have learned about new Texas resident Elon Musk is that you just can’t put him in a box. He thinks out of it.

But that didn’t stop Musk from actually putting himself in a box.

Musk, the billionaire Tesla CEO, is now an occupant in a $50,000 400-square-foot, foldable, prefabricated housing unit at Boca Chica, Texas, or Starbase as Musk refers to it. The housing unit is made by the appropriately named Boxabl, a Las Vegas-based startup that specializes in easy-to-construct housing modules.

According to Teslarati, a website that tracks Tesla/Musk developments, Musk rents the house from SpaceX, his private rocket company.

Boxabl.com touts on its website that delivery and setup can happen in one day. Its Boxabl Casita model is made of concrete panels and steel.

Speculation has been raging about Musk’s new Texas home ever since he put up his California mansions for sale. Would Musk move closer to his new Tesla manufacturing plant in southeast Travis County?

In November, Boxabl hinted in a promotional video that it had built a unit in Boca Chica for a “special client,” showing a Falcon 9 (SpaceX booster rocket) post on its door.

Musk confirmed in a tweet in July that “I do live in a $50k house, but not this specific one”.

My primary home is literally a ~$50k house in Boca Chica / Starbase that I rent from SpaceX. It’s kinda awesome though.

Only house I own is the events house in the Bay Area. If I sold it, the house would see less use, unless bought by a big family, which might happen some day.

Looking at the Casita model, it has a full-size kitchen, bathroom, and living area. At 400 square feet, it’s the size of a standard two-car garage.

No one has speculated whether Musk’s partner, Canadian singer Grimes (née Claire Elise Boucher), would be comfortable in such a small space. And where would their son, X Æ A-Xii (or just “X”) sleep?

While they courted, Grimes did express an interest in getting married in outer space and living on Mars. In an Instagram post, Boxable has made a pitch to set up its homes on Mars. So, it could happen.
