Simple Updates Turn a West Plano Traditional Home Into a Timeless Transitional

This week’s Highlight Home of the Week, sponsored by Lisa Peters of Cardinal Financial takes us to West Plano where Michael Bepko of Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate has this beautifully-updated listing that has the #homeinspo part of my brain spinning.

The home at 5905 Fossil Ridge garnered multiple offers in its five days on the market and went under contract as I was writing this — but I’m particularly interested in the era of this home and the updates. I even did a double take because the twin gables and the brick garden walls look like something in my neighborhood, and I bet you did, too.

This 2,949-square-foot home was built in 1989, just on the cusp of the ‘90s supersized style that’ll sweep many Plano neighborhoods — but this home still has the soul of an early ‘80s home. Bepko points out that the home is a rare one-story in the quiet neighborhood of Windhaven Farms, located near the intersection of Parker and Parkwood near the Dallas North Tollway.

Starting at the home’s façade, I tip my cap to the owner for not automatically painting the brick. Yes, it can look dramatic and fantastic, but white brick homes with dark trim are getting so saturated that they’re practically becoming the norm and original brick fronts are the outliers. Here, I like how the owner uses vibrant and contemporary greenery to liven and brighten the façade.

Stepping inside, the home feels classic and crisp. Custom crown molding and trim throughout add an extra touch of refinement to the design. I’d venture to guess that ’80s design trends would’ve dictated a medium wood stain for the molding and cabinetry, but this new white painted wood gives a great contrast to the rich hardwood floors.

Even the wet bar, a staple of the decade’s homes, has been made current with lighted glass cabinets and celestial-inspired geometric wallpaper.

As you step into the kitchen and family room, there are a few architectural reminders that this Plano home was a child of the ‘80s — namely, the coffered ceiling cove above the kitchen’s breakfast nook. You’ll find plenty of those same beamed pentagons or hexagons in similar ‘80s homes around Plano. Here the owners have neutralized the architectural feature to be white, which blends nicely into the ceiling.

The coffered ceiling continues into the generously-sized family room that’s been fully wired for a sound system and data. That small detail is a great example of subtle home updates you can’t really see. Then the abundance of windows ensures that natural light floods every corner of this family room, creating an inviting and bright ambiance.

The primary suite is a sanctuary of comfort, offering a large, relaxing space, French doors to the covered patio, and an extra-large walk-in closet, catering to all your storage needs. High ceilings add to the sense of openness, making every room feel even more expansive and inviting. Here the owners have replaced all the carpet in the bedrooms, but with two entrenched camps for “team carpet” and “no carpet,” that home update is completely a personalized choice to make.

Finally, step outside to discover your private oasis, an oversized covered patio overlooking a beautiful custom pool, water feature, and lush landscaping. The recently installed privacy fence ensures safety and seclusion, allowing you to unwind and enjoy every moment in your backyard retreat.

In total, the spacious abode features four bedrooms and four full baths thoughtfully arranged for optimal privacy and functionality. With two bedrooms on each side of the living area, the layout offers an ideal setup for both families and guests alike, Bepko says.

That’s a great thing about ‘80s homes — they feature some pretty smart floor plans (and generous bedroom sizes) for the way a homeowner really lives.

Michael Bepko of Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate has listed 5905 Fossil Ridge in Plano for $799,000.
