Welcome to Walkability in This Winnetka Heights Historic Prairie

This historic Prairie is one of those houses that speaks to your heart.

It’s located in the picture-perfect Winnetka Heights Conservation District, has a second floor that makes you feel you are in a treehouse, and oh, there’s that walkability factor!

I’ve known owner Katie Fuerst and her family for years. Katie, Tom, and their kids embrace a nomadic life. They lived in Hollywood Heights, spent a couple of years in Italy, came home and moved to Lake Highlands. Now they live in this fabulous historic Prairie in Oak Cliff. They enjoy experiencing different neighborhoods, but that Italian experience stood out.

I get it because I grew up abroad and there is something about the walkability of European cities that spoils you. You never need a car. You can pop down the street to the bakery, the cafe, or the local florist. You get to know everyone very quickly. It’s like an extended family, and that’s what you get in Winnetka Heights.

“We were looking for walkability, history, and a diverse neighborhood,” Katie said. ” I grew up in Preston Hollow. When it was time for junior high school, I decided I wanted something different. So, I went to the magnet school O.W. Holmes and fell in love with Oak Cliff.”

When the family got itchy feet again, Oak Cliff seemed a natural place to begin the next house hunt.

“First, I have to tell you we have phenomenal Relators,” Katie said. As a busy mom who runs a very creative ceramics business (Check out @katiefuerstart on Instagram) time was not plentiful.

“We wanted to be down the block from a great restaurant,” Katie said. Nova is a hop, skip, and a jump away. They also wanted to use their car as little as possible.

“Our Realtors, Compass agents Thani and Landon Burke of The Burke Group basically ran triage for us because they knew what we wanted, “Katie said. “The minute we walked into this great house, we were sold.”

The historic Prairie house was built in 1927 as a fourplex. You can trace advertisements in the Dallas Morning News back to those early days and see that an apartment rented for $25, all bills paid! Eventually, the 2,280-square-foot fourplex was converted into a single-family home with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a powder bath. The Fuersts were fortunate enough to walk into a completely renovated house, which meant they could add something fun. The built an adorable workshop in the backyard that replicates the historic Prairie style.

“I’m going to miss this house,” Katie said. ” The second floor treehouse feel, the walkability and the neighborhood are all wonderful. This has been such a fun home to live in.”

But nomads don’t stay put for long, and the Fuersts are off on their next adventure. That means you have an opportunity to nab a move-in ready historic Prairie at 206 N. Edgefield Avenue, in one of the most coveted neighborhoods in Dallas. It’s only been listed for a few days and for only $609,900!
