Want to Buy a Piece of Old Dallas Morning News Building History?

Wanna buy the chair of a newspaper reporter ghost of past? Two Dallas auction companies are selling remnants of Dallas Morning News‘ vacated campus at 508 Young Street at an estate auction ending tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.

The estate sale companies, Star Auction Resources and World Wide Auction Group Team, call this sale a “must” for people who appreciate Dallas history and memorabilia. “This building is being renovated and we must clean it out,” the listing reads.

Up for grabs are office furniture, commercial kitchen appliances, an executive office, cubicles, filing cabinets, bathroom fixtures, safes, pictures, warehouse storage racks, security electronics, and doors. Perhaps the prize jewel: An old Mystiqal poster from the now-defunct Mardi Gras celebration in Victory Park and the West End. (Does anyone remember this event? Really not ringing a bell.)

Developer and co-owned of Highland Park Village Ray Washburne purchased the building, including another building and a parking garage, in May 2019 for $28 million, according to A.H. Belo Corporation.

The building was designed by architect George Dahl, making this the fourth local building by Dahl that Washburne has collected.

There are 20 pages of stuff for sale at the Dallas Morning News estate auction, a lot of which will be sold for next to nothing.

There are some obstacles though. To bid, you must a membership for $25 and pay a buyer’s premium of 15 percent, which is added to the hammer price of an auction item. You have three days only to pick up your bid-winning goods — Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday — until the building is gutted. No credit cards or checks are accepted, so payments may be made by cash or payment through your bank’s Zelle program.

Nevertheless here are the highlights:
