Timeless Charm Meets Modern Living: Experience It All for Under $500k in Lochwood

When the home at 11628 Sahara Way was advertised in the Dallas Morning News classifieds in March 1966, one Collin D. Skinner highlighted the choice location of walking distance to what he called Turner Elementary and Lochwood shopping. When Mr. Billy Sanders described it in January 1973, he highlighted the three bedrooms and two full baths with “shag carpet all the way.”

Now in September 2023, Allie Beth Allman agent Juli Black describes the 1955 Lochwood cottage as a “timeless home with incredible value” and she hits the nail on the head.

In fact, this whole neighborhood was built as reasonably priced post-war homes. But Lochwood was unique because it was masterplanned for development with a unique amenity — a corner shopping center as its anchor. Located at the obtuse corner of Garland Road and Jupiter, the Lochwood Shopping Center was believed to be the largest open-air pedestrian mall in the Southwest. Now called White Rock Marketplace, the shopping center first opened in 1957 to news coverage and much fanfare. This place was a big deal and the midcentury homes in the adjoining Lockwood became a sought-after neighborhood in East Dallas.

That brings us to this impressive Sahara Way residence, nestled in a quiet corner of Lochwood with soft rolling hills and abundant mature trees lining this neat, well-kept street. Homes for sale in Lochwood usually get snapped up pretty fast, especially ones that have been updated like this.

Black says this 1,325-square-foot home should move fast. “Priced well under $500k, this Lochwood home isn’t just a steal for its upgrades including design-inspired bathrooms, recently replaced windows, new gutters, and a new roof,” Black said. “But I think its value extends beyond its walls. It’s located a stone’s throw from White Rock Lake and the picturesque Arboretum. It’s where home comfort meets endless outdoor exploration.”

You’ll find many nature-loving East Dallasites outdoors, and how could you not? White Rock and the Arboretum are in your backyard. More on backyards later. First, let’s appreciate the updates and perfect color scheme the owners have achieved with this open living and dining area.

The dining room stands out for its horizontal planked wall painted with a trendy “Storms in Paris” or Sherman Williams “Waterloo,” a beautiful green-blue jewel tone. (Thank you Google Lens.)

The kitchen has two tones of custom cabinets, quartz countertops, and stainless steel appliances with enough room for a second dining area.

The jewel-tone color scheme travels to the primary bedroom, which has an updated bathroom featuring a sleek, frameless rain shower with a built-in shower bench. Two more bedrooms round out the home.

Moving outside, the spacious backyard oasis is a highlight. It’s an ideal space for outdoor gatherings and outdoor dining on the back porch, or relaxation in a quiet corner under a shady tree. The tree canopy adds to the overall appeal and offers a tranquil backdrop for outdoor enjoyment.

As Black has mentioned, the location of 11628 Sahara Way is noteworthy. It’s situated in a well-established Dallas neighborhood known for its excellent schools, convenient access to shopping and dining, and a strong sense of community.

“Lochwood’s charm is undeniable, and with White Rock Lake nearby and Martha Turner Reilly Elementary just around the corner, it’s easy to see why this community is special and this home is a real find.”

Juli Black of Allie Beth Allman and Associates has listed 11628 Sahara Way for $488,000.
