When is “teardown” not a dirty word? When the house is a modern stunner perfectly sited in a deep, tree-lined Tanglewood lot. From its inception, the Tanglewood addition was forward-looking, with a legacy of many midcentury gems. The spacious lots and excellent public schools have tempted owners into tearing down mostly ordinary ranch-style homes and building larger houses. This architect-designed house at 2924 Harlanwood Drive is a good neighbor, honoring the original setbacks of the adjacent houses and preserving the tall mature trees. In fact, the stone veneer echoes the style of some of its midcentury neighbors.

Built in 2014, the two-story structure is composed of four asymmetrical blocks. The plan of the 4,387-square-foot house is completely open with clear sight lines from front to back, emphasized by the vertical run of the rich hardwood floors. A floating staircase hangs in the center. There are three bedrooms and three full bathrooms with two half baths. The master bedroom suite is on the ground floor.

The kitchen is sleek and spacious with commercial-grade appliances and quartz countertops. The refrigerator/freezer is nearly a double-wide. A full laundry room with sink its tucked in behind.

The upstairs living areas are as open as the downstairs. Balconies overlook front and backyards. A large barrel-vaulted room currently being used as a media room could be converted into a fourth bedroom.

One of the second-story bedrooms has doors leading to the balcony at front. It shares the double-height window with the floor below.

The master bath is fully kitted out like a five-star hotel spa with a large soaker tub, shower stall, and long vanity with twin sinks.

The pool spa complex is luxurious and expansive, stretching the full length of the house and yet leaving plenty of wooded garden to spare. The three-car garage is detached and to the rear.
