Keeping it in the family has worked well for award-winning, husband-and-wife homebuilders John and Nancy Scott of Scott Homebuilders. Their most recent project — an uber-cool, Midcentury Modern in Colleyville — took the familial connection one step further
Turns out, the owners were related, albeit distantly.
“They found us through our internet marketing,” says John. Yet it wasn’t until the initial sales call that the Scotts learned the property belonged to a cousin’s son and his wife.

The rapport was instant. Unlike much of the architecture in Colleyville, the clients wanted modern. They also had a set build budget for the 2,550-square-foot home — under $500,000 — including re-platting the lot with the City of Colleyville.
The Scotts pulled together an A-list team: plan designer Jeremy Larsen, architect BSB Design, and architectural draftsman Randy Burgess. All worked closely with the owners throughout the entire design-build process.
“The buyers had a lot of ideas in mind.”
“We had to search long and hard for some of the things they wanted,” says Nancy.
Case in point: the exterior brick color, stacked and used in tandem with saw-cut smoked Leuders stone.

The windows were another challenge. Natural light abounds, even in places you don’t expect.
“We found that if we grouped more standard sizes together, we could achieve the same feeling as a more expensive modern designed home,” says Nancy.
“The buyers were willing to work with us so we could provide them with the home they wanted and still stay within budget,” adds John.

Some things proved splurge-worthy, including the light, natural-colored, wide-planked engineered wood flooring throughout the living areas. Additional noteworthy features include the industrial concrete-look tile fireplace, large quartz kitchen island, and shaker wood cabinetry.
The spa-like master bath sports a freestanding tub and oversize shower. White subway tiles in the secondary baths — one used vertically, the other basket-weave — add a whimsical touch.

“Our designers and customers got very playful with the applications,” says Nancy.
Colleyville isn’t Scott Homebuilders’ first foray into modern. Its Bluffview spec home won the 2018 ARC award for Best Modern Architectural Design, $1 million – $1.5 million.
The Dallas Builders Association got it right. This house is a stunner.

Highlights include a dramatic floating staircase, soaring ceilings, and an open floor plan. The light-filled dining room looks out onto a beautifully landscaped backyard, complete with pool, spa, covered patio, and outdoor kitchen.
Upstairs is stay-at-home friendly. The large media room features state-of-the-art equipment. There’s also a second living space and game/workout/play area.

Next up for Scott Homebuilders, a Daltxrealestate.com Approved Builder? Another Colleyville spec, a 6,000-square-foot remodel on the canal in the upscale Lakes of Somerset community.
“It’s a 28-year-old traditional-style home on the canal with a pool. Nine Texas Rangers have lived in the neighborhood,” says John.
Projected selling price? Under $1 million.
For now, the five-star homebuilders are busier in the northeast Tarrant County area.
“I grew up in the Park Cities; Nancy, in Fort Worth,” says John. “We’re comfortable building anywhere in the Metroplex.”
