If modern design makes you merry, then the Monogram Modern Home Dallas event is a must-attend Aug. 21-22.

Popping up for one weekend in the Decorative Center Dallas at 1617 Hi Line Dr., the Monogram Modern Home is a pop-up, pre-fab modern home, host to a series of events, including culinary tastings, product demonstrations, and Continuing Education Credits (CEUs) for accredited industry professionals.

The event is part of a partnership between Dwell Magazine and Monogram Appliances that takes them on the road to six U.S. cities in six months: Portland, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Austin, Dallas, and Boston.

“The goal of the Monogram Modern Home is to get the Monogram brand in front of as many design-oriented consumers and professionals as we can—that’s why we decided to take it on the road,” said Michael Mahan, General Manager for Monogram. “We’ve partnered up with Dwell to offer CEU credits at each of our locations so designers can come in, get their certifications they need for the year, and enjoy a great day with the Monogram brand.”

Friday, Aug. 21, the home will host a series of complimentary CEUs (register here):

  • Universal Design: A New Approach to Kitchen Design, 9:30-10:30 a.m. CEU: IDCEC, NKBA, AIA 0.1
  • What’s HOT in Cooking: Current Cooking Technologies & Venting Options, 11 a.m.-12 p.m., CEU: IDCEC, NKBA, AIA 0.1
  • Kitchen Ventilation: Maintaining Clean Air in a Residence, 12:30-1:30 p.m., CEU: NKBA, AIA 0.1

  • The New Face of Affluence, 3:30-4:30 p.m., CEU: NKBA, AIA 0.1

On Saturday, Aug. 22, the doors open to the public. Attendees can attend multiple events, take part in a surprise social media event, and enter to win a Monogram appliance.

One dark side to this otherwise peppy event: Dwell Media (San Fransisco-based publisher of Dwell Magazine) has been all over a local charity for trademark infringement, Dwell with Dignity, a Dallas nonprofit with a mission “to help families escape poverty and homelessness through design; one household at a time.” You can read Robert Wilonsky’s recent column on the situation here, but here’s the long-story-short from Wilonsky:

Dwell Media has been claiming since at least January that Dwell with Dignity is infringing on its trademark, and Dwell with Dignity’s had it up to here with the mountainous stack of letters from lawyers threatening lawsuits. So Dwell with Dignity went ahead and filed [a federal lawsuit] in the hopes of having a judge tell the magazine to stop with the harassing already.

You can read the 14 pages of legal documents of Dwell With Dignity v Dwell Magazine in Wilonsky’s article, including the disappointing assertion that Dwell Media is seeking “to bully a budget-conscientious charity into changing its name and marks even when there is no likelihood of confusion.”
