The fastest-growing county in Texas is Hays County, just south of Austin. This according to the Texas Office of the State Demographer. Next up, our Collin County.

      1. Hays County: 2010 population – 157,107; 2050 population – 824,070; Change – 666,963; Percent change – 424.50%
      2. Collin County; 2010 population – 782,341; 2050 population – 3,801,840; Change – 3,019,499; Percent change – 386.00%

Demographers project that Collin County will grow “by 386 percent over the next 35 years, with the addition of more than 3 million residents growing its population from 782,341 to 3.8 million.”

Let’s just process that for a moment: Collin County will be half the population of Chicago, or half the population of the entire DFW metro area by 2050.

Harris County in Houston is set to grow the most, with the largest amount of people: 3.4 million. I cannot feature the traffic!

All across Texas, the counties housing major metropolises are projected to grow at a much slower rate than their bordering suburban counties:

-Travis County, Austin, 96.3 % growth

-Tarrant County, Fort Worth, 93.3% growth

-Bexar County, San Antonio, 85.4% growth

-Dallas County, Dallas, 49% growth

So Dallas is projected to grow at about half the rate of San Antonio! That means Dallas County residents will be left holding the bag with higher taxes, becoming the center hole of the big, juicy economic donut surrounding us pointing northward. Perhaps some of this is inevitable, since there is more raw land available in the suburbs to develop. But half the growth of San Antonio is not so hot for us:
