By ML Interiors Group

The zigzag pattern has been popping up in interior design for some time – and its popularity doesn’t seem to be waning any time soon!

The Three Zigzag Patterns Found in Interior Design

Zigzag patterns have long been a popular choice in interior design, adding a dynamic and visually appealing element to any space. Let’s explore the three main zigzag patterns commonly used in interior design, their characteristics, and how they can be incorporated into various design styles.

Flamestitch Zigzag

The flame stitch zigzag pattern, also known as the bargello pattern, is a unique and eye-catching design that resembles flickering flames. Used throughout the world, this pattern is created by repeating a series of diagonal stitches in contrasting colors, resulting in a vibrant and mesmerizing effect. Flame stitch patterns are commonly found in upholstery fabrics, throw pillows, and wall coverings. When incorporated into a space, this pattern can add a sense of warmth and energy, making it a great choice for bohemian and eclectic design styles.

The Chevron Zigzag Pattern

Interior design

The chevron zigzag pattern is perhaps the most well-known and widely used type in interior design. It features a continuous, symmetrical V-shaped design that creates a sense of movement and energy. Chevron patterns can be found in a variety of materials, including textiles, wallpapers, and flooring.

When incorporated into a space, chevron patterns can add a modern and bold touch, making them particularly popular in contemporary and eclectic design styles. One of ML Interiors Group’s favorite places to use this pattern is in visually immediate areas, such as throw pillows or seating fabrics. Classic Herringbone ZigZag

Interior design

The herringbone zigzag pattern is characterized by its distinctive “V” shape, similar to the chevron pattern. However, unlike the chevron pattern, the herringbone pattern is created by alternating the direction of the V shapes, resulting in a more intricate and visually captivating design. Herringbone patterns are commonly seen in hardwood flooring, tile work, and textiles. This pattern adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to any interior, making it a popular choice for traditional and transitional design styles. You can see this pattern demonstrated in the tilework of the fireplace and kitchen backsplash from the projects pictured here.

Now that we have explored the three main types of zigzag patterns let’s discuss how they can be effectively incorporated into interior design.

  1. Balance and Proportion: When using zigzag patterns, it’s important to maintain a sense of balance and proportion within the space. Consider using the pattern as an accent rather than overwhelming the entire room. For example, a chevron-patterned accent wall or a herringbone-patterned area rug can create a focal point without overpowering the space.
  2. Color Palette: Choose a color palette that compliments the zigzag pattern you have selected. Opt for contrasting colors to enhance the visual impact of the pattern, or choose more subtle tones for a more understated look. Experiment with different color combinations to find the perfect balance for your design.
  3. Mixing Patterns: Don’t be afraid to mix zigzag patterns with other patterns in your interior design. Pairing a chevron-patterned throw pillow with a floral-printed sofa or combining a herringbone-patterned floor with a striped area rug can create a visually interesting and dynamic space.

Zigzag patterns offer a versatile and visually appealing option for interior design. Whether you prefer the boldness of the chevron, the elegance of classic herringbone, or the vibrancy of the flame stitch pattern, incorporating zigzag patterns into your design can add a unique and captivating element to any space.

Remember to consider balance, color palette, and pattern mixing when incorporating zigzag patterns into your interior design to create a harmonious and visually stunning result.
