Homes in the Dallas-Plano-Irving metro area are among the nation’s best in growth and stability.

The housing market in North Texas remains one of the best housing markets for growth and stability.

We knew that, of course. But SmartAsset affirmed those assets in its 2022 edition of Best Housing Markets for Growth and Stability.

The Dallas-Plano-Irving metro area has experienced a 228 percent home price change since 1997 and ranks seventh among 400 metropolitan areas nationwide. The Fort Worth-Arlington-Grapevine metro area had a 213 percent change.

This is an improvement from their 2021 showing. Last year, Dallas-Plano-Irving was 10th and Fort Worth-Arlington-Grapevine was 18th.

In its eighth annual study, SmartAsset analyzed historical data from the past 25 years (1997-2021) to find the best and worst housing markets for growth and stability.

The nationwide growth is good news for homeowners looking to make a return on their investment. But when prices grow too quickly, a boom can sometimes turn into a bust — thus, growth is generally preferable for building equity.

All data comes from the Federal Housing Administration and covers the 25 years from the first quarter of 1997 through the fourth quarter of 2021.

Using this data, SmartAsset has determined that Texas is an ideal place to put down roots.

The Austin-Round Rock-Georgetown metro area ranks first in the nation with a 368-percent home-price growth. The Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land area ranks sixth (221 percent), Odessa eighth (247 percent), and San Angelo 10th (214 percent). Waco is 12th (212 percent), and College Station-Bryan 17th (198 percent).

In a top-20 ranking of worst housing markets, Texas is absent.

In the 2021 report, Midland was the top metro area. Midland and Boulder, Colorado, have dominated the rankings since 2015.

SmartAsset created a detailed study and opened up many rabbit holes. 🐇
