The Dallas Architecture Forum will host its annual 365 Modern Living Cocktail Party Series starting Tuesday, June 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. Each evening will include a cocktail reception, hors d’oeuvres, and the rare opportunity to meet the design team behind some of the most significant modern residences in Dallas, including a very special property inside Urban Reserve near Lake Highlands, and the Rock Cliff and Surrey Circle Residences in Preston Hollow. Valet parking is provided, and business or cocktail attire suggested. Attendance is limited so guests are encouraged to purchase tickets early to reserve their spot.

The exquisite Urban Reserve Residence is described by its architect, Billie Tsien as “having the plan of a private city condominium sited in the woods.” The Dallas Architecture Forum says, “It incorporates both urban and natural edges and exemplifies the stringent sustainable design standards set by the developer for this community, who with her husband is also the owner of the residence. Tsien and partner Tod Williams, whose many high-profile projects include the Obama Presidential Library, were engaged to design the residence after the owners learned more about their deep mutual respect for design when Billie and Tod spoke for The Dallas Architecture Forum.”
A second-level terrace with outdoor kitchen and lap pool surrounded by a tree canopy serves as an enchanting space to entertain. You’ll also find a thoughtfully designed kitchen, guest rooms clad in sandblasted concrete, and a wooded ravine that leads to a koi pond and Japanese garden. The home is said to embody the combination of beautiful design with durability to exemplify the owners’ way of living.

The masterfully built Rock Cliff Residence was originally designed by renowned Dallas architect Harwood K. Smith, founder of the firm HKS. Smith’s architecture stems from early modern Texas vernacular inspired by O’Neil Ford, and can be felt throughout. Situated on a lush, one-acre-site, it showcases floor-to-ceiling windows that bring the outdoors in, met by a façade in beautiful St. Joe brick.
The Dallas Architecture Forum reveals the story behind the home’s renovation saying, “The current owners purchased the property with a vision to maintain the heritage of the residence while carefully increasing its size. Renovation architect Josh Nimmo utilized a natural 30-foot slope in elevation to add a 1,500-square-foot bi-level wing that transitions seamlessly with the rest of house. Architectural elements already present in the original design, including vaulted ceilings, skylights, and steel rafters were incorporated into the addition. Original interior spaces were redone with white walls suitable for hanging art, serene white-oak floors, and white marble slabs in the baths.”
You don’t want to miss the home’s luxurious appointments, which include a custom white Hollywood Regency credenza and Schonbek crystal chandelier, a sculptural dining table designed by Pritzker Prize-winner Norman Foster, classic Knoll Saarinen chairs covered in deep red mohair, and sleek mid-century modern furnishings throughout, such as Minotti chairs, and a gondola sofa.

Feast your eyes on Surrey Circle, a residence admired for its strong example of indoor/outdoor living. The contemporary design affords moveable glass walls that open the main living areas to an 800-square-foot screened living room, marked by a large stone fireplace, outdoor kitchen, dining area, and radiant ceiling heaters for enjoyment throughout the seasons. The exterior consists of brick, smooth cut limestone, stucco and Resysta siding accents, while a Silvermist stone hardscape and graveland cobble entry courtyard welcome you upon arrival. We love the Bluestone slab paths that surround the stunning pool and wooden deck for an organic feel.
The Dallas Architecture Forum says, “To compliment the expanse of windows and light, earth and water were two primary elements driving the interior design and selection of materials and colors – wood, concrete, steel and stone secure this natural palette. The neutral furnishings add warmth with a large splash of black, blue and white in the custom family room rugs. One of the most impressive features is the family room fireplace which incorporates a single horizontal cold rolled steel slab that spans the full width of the room.”
