What is a LEED certified home and why should you care?

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a designation from the U.S. Green Building Council to promote and encourage home builders and owners to be environmentally responsible and efficient with their home. But what does that really mean?  Well it means this is an uber energy-efficient home filled with sustainable materials from nearby areas that not only are eco-friendly, they’re really cool as well.

Previously, the stacked stone wall was painted, but was brought back to intended form with a heavy duty sand blaster during Demo Party.

Welcome to the midcentury modern, single-story, two-bedroom, 1,500-square-foot townhome at 4500 Westridge  Avenue No. 20.  The townhome is part of a 28-unit complex designed by Fort Worth architect John Wesley Jones in the early 1960s.

Now That’s What I Call Demo Day

When the current owners of the townhome initially purchased the property, it was in shambles.  Paint covered the stacked stone walls, smokers obviously had lived their previously, and the floor plan was choppy, which caused the home to be very dark.

The kitchen is filled with custom crafted cabinetry and PaperStone counters

With the help of friends, the new owners had a “Demo Party” with hammers, sand blasters, ladders, and adult libations to start the renovation project.

Now the contemporary home is spacious, with plenty of natural light pouring in from all directions.  The townhome backs to the No. 8 hole of the Ridgela Country Club Golf Course and is surrounded and hidden by tall plants, shrubbery and an entry courtyard.

LEED Platinum Status

Initially the goal was to update and make the townhome more eco-friendly.  The goal of LEED Silver was set.  As the project continued, more and more LEED points were assigned, and when the project was completed, the home was deemed LEED Platinum — the highest rating possible.

Check out the Vermont unfading green slate floors which covers 80 percent of this townhome!

Average energy bills are less than $70 per month. LED lighting rated for over 50,000 hours are used.  Wall paints, wood surfaces, and counter tops are all eco-friendly from nearby vendors.  The only material that was not considered LEED-friendly is the Vermont unfading green slate floors … but you’ll forgive them once you see the stunning floors!

There is tons of purposeful cabinetry throughout this contemporary townhome.

Naturally, 4500 Westridge Avenue No. 20 makes the most of all areas.  Closets and cabinets are all custom designed and fabricated.  Sliding doors are used to reduce wasted space.  Shelves are uniquely situated to maximize all of this 1,500-square-foot abode.

This one-of-a-kind townhome is listed by Debbie Petty of Williams Trew Real Estate.  It is listed for sale at $425,000.  Please contact Debbie for a private tour — you won’t regret it!
