This year’s Kips Bay Decorator Show House, which kicked off Friday, achieved the near-impossible: It successfully merged the talents of 22 accomplished, uber-creative designers. Somehow, some way, within a few short weeks they managed to transform a traditional 1940s Old Preston Hollow house into a cohesive, luxuriously livable space.
The good news is, unlike last year’s abbreviated viewing window, the 2023 show house is opening its doors for two weeks. Visitors are invited to tour the home, located at 9446 Hathaway Street, now through November 14.
One key takeaway: The use of trending colors throughout.
Bold darks, warm neutrals, and timeless blues and greens are among the top picks of major paint companies.
Case in point: the previously light-toned exterior is now a dark, charcoal tone (think Behr’s Cracked Pepper, its 2024 color of the year).
According to Sarah Fishburne, Home Depot’s director of trend and design, a dark shade blends in with landscape and plants. “It truly feels organic. I think it’s like a really inky soil-y color, which is nice.”
Colors on Display at Kips Bay
For the 2023 Kips Bay Decorator Show Case, Dallas designer Jase Jones used Benjamin Moore’s Black Beauty paint to trim the bar in his stylish “Liquide Library” space. Calacatta marble with multi-hued striations and backsplash tile from Artistic Tile add to the allure.
The home’s entryway, created by LA-based MLK Studio and Jackson Paige Interiors, features Porter Teleo’s hand-painted black and white wallcovering. A sheer slate Roman shade, trimmed with pewter pom-pom fringe, allows sunlight to shine through (both from The Shade Store).
Blue appeared on multiple lists for the multi-brand giant COTY. Among the many iterations of the color: Sherwin-Williams Upward (a sky-inspired shade with calm gray undertones); Dunn-Edwards Skipping Stone (an oceanic, meditative blue); and Benjamin Moore Blue Nova (a versatile, mid-toned hue).
“Villa Windowpane,” the handiwork of Mark D. Sikes Interiors, sports timeless blue-and-white Schumacher fabric on walls and windows. He also chose blue to cover chairs from Givenchy’s legendary Le Jonchet, acquired from Christie’s.
Green remains relevant.
Graham & Brown’s Viridis, reminiscent of flora and fauna, symbolizes growth and health, according to head of design Maryanne Cartwright. It was also the color of choice for Simms Hayes Design’s “Fern Returns,” one of the show house’s bedroom suites.
Designer Julie Hayes painted a room-dividing lattice Benjamin Moore Cedar Green. A fern fabric by Quadrille gives walls, windows, and upholstery a fresh, cheery feel.
Dallas designer Kips Bay veteran Cathy Kincaid chose a botanical wallpaper by Lisa Fine for “An Ode to Bunny Mellon,” another of the home’s five bedrooms. She also collaborated with MIRTH Studio to create painted wood flooring and gave built-in bookcases a coat of green lacquer.
One additional color trend – warm neutrals – took center stage in KMNelson Design’s “Memoir of Marrakech” bedroom and bath. The suite’s focal point: Fromental’s hand-painted, desert-inspired silk wallcovering.
For DIYers, Glidden Paint by PPG’s COTY, Limitless, is a honey beige that can be paired with just about every color scheme. “This modern neutral is as adaptable as its name implies and is taking the place of cool neutral tones that are so last year,” according to company color expert Ashley McCollum.
The fourth annual Kips Bay Dallas Show House runs through Wednesday, Nov. 15.
Tickets for the VIP Opening Weekend, hosted in five sessions daily until today Nov. 5, 2023 are priced at $150. VIP tickets include a welcome cocktail upon arrival and a Show House Journal.
General admission tickets priced at $50 include a Show House Journal and a half-day of design inspiration.
Note: Smythson, a Brit brand known for its luxury stationery and lavish agendas, will host a pop-up during the Kips Bay Dallas Show House opening weekend.
The Kips Bay Decorator Show House Dallas will benefit two local charities: Dwell with Dignity, a nonprofit agency dedicated to creating soothing, inspiring homes for families struggling with homelessness and poverty, and The Crystal Charity Ball, another Dallas-based organization whose mission is to aid, support and make contributions to children’s charities in Dallas County.
