Thomas Cusick Homes: Word Spreads Fast When You’re Good at What You Do

Most Sundays you can find Tom Cusick on the back patio of his Farmers Branch home — an inviting outdoor living space that begs you to open a cold one and take a load off. It’s proof that Tom “lives what he builds” and is a master at creating gorgeous outdoor living spaces with clever interior planning.

You’ll find a lot of his work in the Brookhaven Country Club Community of Farmers Branch, where his eponymous company Thomas Cusick Custom Homes is concentrated on.

But when you’re good at what you do, word gets around fast in the Metroplex. And when a homeowner came to him with an ambitious vision for their Kessler Park home located in a conservation district, the team at Thomas Cusick Custom Homes got to work.

The homeowners had a vision of a Frank Lloyd Wright-style Prairie for this quarter-acre lot overlooking Stevens Park Golf Course and Thomas Cusick Custom Homes delivered in a big way.

Cusick created an entertainer’s dream outdoor living space and outdoor kitchen for the 3,800-square-foot home, plus a pool with tanning ledge and spa, a putting green, and a second-story patio to take it all in.

The builder has now completed several homes in Kessler Park and Bluffview neighborhoods, each a unique, truly custom home. But for the Kansas City native who moved to the Dallas area in 2010, Farmers Branch is where his heart is.

“Farmers Branch is just so special,” Cusick says. “We know what the neighborhoods command in architecture and that’s what drives people to us — our quality and architectural style.”

Drive down the streets and cul-de-sacs in Brookhaven and you’ll see quite a few of Thomas Cusick’s rebuilds and new builds, including a 4,700-square-foot show stopper on Braemar Drive.

White brick, sharp black lines, and steep gable roof peaks define this modern take on English-traditional Tudors. Inside, you’ll find extra-wide 7-inch engineered white oak floors, cathedral ceilings in every bedroom, and smart uses of space in every corner.

Around the corner from the Braemar modern Tudor is this 4,979-square-foot transitional home belonging to State Representative Julie Johnson, who represents Farmers Branch. The stucco and rough-cut stone home features a prominent panel of Ipe wood, a tropical hardwood that looks like mahogany and is sturdier than cedar.

Large folding panoramic doors help blend indoor living into outdoor living effortlessly and provide a space that can be used year-round. The outdoor patio includes a wood-burning fireplace and infrared heaters in the ceiling, making it cozy in the winter, and automated rolldown shades and commercial-grade outdoor misting systems, making it comfortable in the summer.

We mentioned Thomas Cusick Homes is a master of clever interior space planning and this custom bourbon and wine storage area is proof. Nestled under the staircase, this spirits room features custom glass and doors tall enough that most won’t have to crouch down too much to enter. Glass shelves prominently display bourbon and whiskeys, while a wall-mounted rack stores more frequently used wines. Tucked in the back of the spirits room is a special nook with custom cabinetry for the good stuff.
