Rarely do you find enclaves in Dallas that are seeded with one particular architect like Oak Lawn is with Bud Oglesby designs. The modernist architect was quite prolific in the area, with many of his angular, eye-catching townhomes and condos located in the Mansion Park area and nearby. We always love seeing how homeowners have updated this well-known architect’s work, while still retaining the form and function that make Bud Oglesby homes so recognizable.

This particular two-bedroom condo is our High Caliber Home of the Week presented by Lisa Peters of Caliber Home Loans for that reason and more. Not only is it a sizable example of a unit in this Hood Street complex, but it’s sleek and serene with plenty of its original 1969 charm.

“The current owner performed a tasteful update in 2015 making a harmonious connection of some of the 1969 elements — floating staircase and GE Wonder Kitchen — with modern creature comforts like new lighting, custom cabinetry, and appliances,” says Compass Dallas listing agent Brad Jeffreys.

The home features two bedrooms, one bathroom, and 1,230 square feet on two floors. The recent remodel was comprehensive, with custom millwork, museum-finish walls, and custom window treatments that allow light to filter in through the floor-to-ceiling windows that show off the ample outdoor oasis. In fact, Jeffreys notes that this home is awfully bright thanks to Oglesby’s clever design, which maximizes the exposure on both floors.

“With condominium design often limiting the ability to get natural light into your living space since it often only comes from two ends of the home, this design includes tall spans of windows that keep the spaces bright and light-filled,” he said.

As we previously mentioned, the house also sports the original 1969 GE Wonder Kitchen. These built-in beauties offered all the luxury of a fully electric kitchen that was completely internally wired and plumbed. According to Retro Renovation, these all-in-one units were popular from 1955 to 1970 and included an automatic dishwasher, range, Disposal-equipped sink, and a washer/dryer all mounted under one stainless steel counter.

Of course, the remodel is a flawless combination of old and new, with the kitchen being a prime example. The huge wall of custom cabinetry goes perfectly with the GE Wonder Kitchen, and it transitions so well to the aesthetic of the rest of the home with the eat-in breakfast bar featuring a waterfall counter.

The second story is spacious and totally kitted out with even more designer lighting and window treatments. The master bedroom is both bright and private, benefiting from a corner window, while the second bedroom functions well as a home office or even a guest room. Even better is the tastefully updated bathroom, with penny tile and a beautiful mirror cabinet that offers just enough to attract the eye without being overpowering.

While most people will fall in love with the exceptional interiors, I have to say that the large outdoor patio space is especially attractive. I’m an avid container gardener, and if you’re like me, you’re already moving your potted plants into this bright and private oasis. What better respite from the busy city life without losing the attractive location? And yes, 2711 Hood St. Apt. G has a very attractive location.

As you would guess, Jeffreys agrees.

“For today’s busy lifestyle, this low-maintenance home is situated in the middle of some of the best that mid-town/Uptown Dallas has to offer — from the Katy Trail, the McKinney corridor, restaurants of Oak Lawn and the Design District, to the beauty of Turtle Creek,”

This gorgeous Bud Oglesby-designed condo is definitely a High Caliber Home of the Week, and it’s not out of the realm of reality. Jeffreys has listed 2711 Hood St. Apt. G for $349,900.
