There is a considerable difference between builder homes and architect-designed homes. This Gastonwood contemporary is a shining example of why everyone should use an architect.
Modern Design Brothers Adam and Amir Hamghalam understand the importance of an excellent architect. They began building contemporary houses seven years ago, concentrating on East Dallas.
“We saw a lack of spec projects done correctly and thought, that is our niche,” Adam said. “We look at every home as one we want to live in, so we build with the highest quality construction and are completely hands-on. We believe in building natural, unique, custom homes.”

When the brothers discovered a 1948 tear-down on La Vista with views overlooking the Lakewood Country Club golf course, they immediately envisioned the next project.
“We hired architect Jim Manning who lives in Lakewood,” Adam said. “It’s his first design for us, but we’ve been friends for years, and he did an amazing job.”

A Gastonwood Contemporary For Real Life
Manning has been a fixture on the Dallas architecture scene, spending 37 years with a premier commercial firm before opening his own company in 2008. His focus is on contemporary architecture that works for a client’s lifestyle.
Adam and Amir are inspired by the contemporary design they see on their travels, bringing many of those natural elements into their designs.
“What was important for us in this house was big windows,” Adam said. “We wanted to bring in as much of the view as possible from every room.”

They chose white rift-cut oak and black quartz to balance the Porcelanosa floor tile, which cleverly mimics a concrete look, blending beautifully to ensure an immediate and encompassing warmth.
The principal bedroom in the 4,153-square-foot, four-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bathroom Gastonwood contemporary was placed upstairs to take advantage of the view overlooking the golf course. Should a buyer want an elevator, the shaft is already in place.

Details For Days
There are eye-catching details at every turn as you tour this Gastonwood contemporary, but the principal bathroom is the jaw-drop moment. It’s wrapped in Porcelanosa tile with a glass ceiling.
“Jim encouraged us to push this to the limit,” Adam said. The glass ceiling for the open shower is something he’s done before, and we get a lot of compliments on it.”

Eco-friendly and dramatic Ipe was used outdoors for decking and fencing. David Rolston designed a clever front courtyard for the home.
“He created a dome of unmowed Zoysia grass for kids to play on,” Adam said. “It’s across from the home’s office, so you can keep an eye on them while you get some work done.”
It’s clear that Modern Design Brothers have found their niche and are filling it beautifully.
